Formed in 2024 after meeting through various orchestras and chamber music projects, our string quartet brings together four musicians based in the Netherlands, each contributing their own character, unique background, and shared joy in making music together - usually in our gezellig studio, The Godown, which happily sits by 'het IJ' in Amsterdam, where we rehearse and sometimes perform (and have even recorded!).

 

We are passionate about bringing the timelessness of the string quartet "sound" to audiences in a wide range of versatile and accessible settings. We are continuously exploring our own unique sound as Kwartet aan t IJ, given we are all from different parts of the world and different cultural and musical backgrounds.

Finally - we also love learning as permanent students of the art of the string quartet! We have been been honoured to learn from members of the Concertgebouw Orkest, Ruysdael Quartet, Cuarteto Casals and others.  Most recently, we were selected to participate in the 2026 String Quartet Biennale Mastercourse for Amateur String Quartets, where we performed David Dramm's Déjà vu, and Felix Mendelssohn's String Quartet No.6.
